A DAY after attending his father’s funeral, Dean Palandri marked the occasion by hitting an emotion-filled century for St John’s Tecoma against Johnson Park in DeCoite Shield.
As a sign of respect, the Sharks also wore black armbands for Mike Palandri, who passed away last week.
The Sharks took two early wickets to have the Saints 2/6 when Palandri strode to the crease, joining Andrew Evans (55).
Five partners and 71 overs later, Palandri completed his century in front of his mother and family.
He was dismissed for 105 with the score on 219, before the Saints finished the day on 9/244.
Liyan deSilva (4/33) and Ben Stallworthy (4/66) did the job for the Sharks, while Bryn Gaunt suffered a dental injury when completing a catch.
In other DeCoite games, Lysterfield made 269 against South Belgrave with opposing skippers Nathan Walsh (68) and Aaron Suckling (5/89) imposing themselves on the game.
FTG Footballers were dismissed for 165 by Knoxfield with Luke Scanlan claiming four wickets, while Olinda was bowled out for 178 by Rowville.
In Norm Reeves Shield, Knoxfield hosted Upwey in a top-of-the-table clash.
The Tigers batted the day to finish on 8/272.
Darren Spence (87) and Quenten Wells (74) led the way with Cameron Wheeler (39) scoring some late runs. The Knights will have to bat all day to take the points in this game.
Monbulk made a solid show, setting Knox Gardens 262.
Uzair Alam (85) and Daniel Clarke (77) proved to be the best bats for the Hawks, while Zac Flintoff’s five wickets kept the Falcons in the game.
Feathers will fly next week in pursuit of the six points.
Monto Perera took four wickets as Eildon Park bowled The Basin out for 158.
Jake Best (46) and Josh Lee (30) were the top scorers for the Bears on the day, although Eildon Park did not have it all their own way, finishing on 2/27.
At HV Jones Reserve, Mountain Gate made 160 against Ferntree Gully on the back of Clint Buckland’s 44 and Luke Bowyers 41.
For the Blues, Bryce Galvin had his best return of the season taking 4/37 and Ryan Handley celebrated his return with three wickets. Leading into next week, Ferntree Gully is 0/34.
Doug Oaten (80) stepped up for Belgrave, helping them to 9/244 against Upper Ferntree Gully at Belgrave Recreation Reserve.
Rob Birnie’s four wickets was the best return for the Kings, which will be looking to redeem themselves after last week’s collapse.
