The relentless rain last Wednesday and Thursday was a good indication for our playing members to make alternative plans for the first week of round 3.
The thought of playing cricket seemed to be insignificant for most of the state and with families affected in our region with anywhere from 40 to 120mm of rain over the last week.
The RDCA made the sensible call to cancel all Friday night cricket and Senior Saturday Mens cricket as the number of grounds were unfit for play.
Juniors were asked to report to grounds as the motivation is to get as many kids playing cricket as possible, the RDCA saying “if your ground is fit to play, get the kids playing.”
Montrose Reserve is in a moment of repair, but it drains very well and the under 14s were able to get a start to their round 3 on Saturday morning along with the under 16’s who played at Heatherdale.
The under 16’s are coming off two tough loses in the first two rounds, found themselves sent into bat against a strong Heatherdale team. The innings started a little shaky with Flynn Dexter losing his wicket early and we found ourselves 1/6. This brought together Riley Logan and Aden Bates who were able to stabilise the innings, Logan (35) and Bates (46). The team was bowled out in the 49th over for 148. A good total to be able to defend next week.
The under 14’s played St Andrews at home and were bowled out for 108 (L.Walker 64 not out) and St Andrews are 2/21 in reply.
Montrose Wolves Women had their first home game for the season at home on Sunday afternoon. We have a relatively new group of women this season and it’s very exciting to see everyone enjoying their cricket so far. Officer made the long trip up to Montrose for the game. Officer won the toss and elected to bat. The ladies bowled really well keeping Officer to 3/81 off their 20 overs. A great fielding display with a fantastic catch and two run outs. In reply, Officer were never in it, with Grace Pearce dominating with 40 off 38 balls at the top of the order put this one to bed within 12 overs. A great win for the Ladies who are now 1-1 heading into round 3.
