Police have launched an investigation after a 28-year-old Lilydale man was killed in a suspected hit-and-run collision in Mooroolbark early on Friday morning.
Emergency services were called to Manchester Road around 1.55am after an unconscious man was found lying on the roadway.
ABC News and Nine News reported that the man had been walking erratically along the road and the driver of the vehicle accidentally struck him before taking off.
Police also told the media outlets he had earlier discharged himself from hospital. It is also believed the Lilydale man was with another person before the incident.
The man was treated by paramedics, but tragically died at the scene.
Detectives from the Major Collision Investigation Unit believe the victim was struck by a white SUV shortly before 2am. The vehicle then fled the area, travelling south along Manchester Road.
CCTV footage from the Mooroolbark Police Station identifies the white SUV entering the five-ways roundabout from Manchester Road and heading in the direction of Hull or Lincoln Roads.
Manchester Road was blocked by police outside Mooroolbark College for several hours.
Police are appealing to the public for assistance.
