Box Hill Institute’s Lilydale Lakeside campus will be the home a course engagement night on Thursday 25 August, from 3pm to 7pm.

Prospective vocational and higher education students from across Melbourne have participated in events at its Box Hill campuses on Tuesday, and more will engage today at its Lilydale Lakeside campus.

With plenty of on-campus buzz about future job opportunities, prospective students will have participated in 57 activities, including tours, presentations, workshops and demonstrations across 16 study areas.

Daniel Trevisan, 30, a third-year Air Conditioning and Refrigeration Apprentice, encouraged people to see skills shortages as an opportunity when deciding on a career.

“Studying in an in-demand area like Electrical and Refrigeration is a smart move,” Daniel said.

“The idea for entering the trade came from a friend who was working in the industry. He said that as well as being highly skilled and varied work, that there were plenty of employers looking for qualified tradies.

That’s proven true for me, and I’m now working for one of Melbourne’s leading providers of specialist air conditioning services.”

Box Hill Institute Chief Executive Officer and Managing Director Grant Radford said Melbourne’s skill shortages were largely mirrored at the national level.

“As leaders prepare for the Jobs and Skills Summit, we’re supporting efforts by providing modern qualifications for in-demand workforces,” Grant said.

“Most sectors appear to be under pressure from a series of factors including supply, and our goal is to provide direct industry support with job-ready graduates in high-demand areas. An insight into this week’s public events, is that people are having a really good look at what’s in-demand and that we have a big role to play in making their career dreams come true.”

Greater Melbourne jobseekers are focusing on the ‘in-demand sectors’ ahead of the Australian Government’s Jobs and Skills Summit on 1-2 September, according to Box Hill Institute (BHI).

The top three most popular study areas at the Institute’s ‘Winter Discovery Nights’ open week events, match the needs of Aussie industries calling for qualified staff:

• Nursing and Health

• Trades and Transport

• Animal Care

Regional areas have been particularly hard hit by skilled staff shortages and BHI’s Lilydale Lakeside facilities in Melbourne’s outer-east are a centre of collaboration and training for local businesses, schools, and Yarra Ranges Council.

Those interested in jobs in the trades, community services, early childhood, hospitality, nursing and many other in-demand sectors can attend today’s Lilydale event from 3-7pm.

Those who missed this week’s Winter Discovery Nights events are encouraged to book a one-on-one session with Institute teachers to learn how they can pursue a career in an in-demand field.

Box Hill Institute, Lilydale Campus is located at 1 Jarlo Drive, Lilydale, 3140.
