As the worst of the Montrose bushfire comes to an end, Yarra Ranges Council and the CFA turn to recovery mode.
Contained within control lines, the fire which had doubled in size overnight on Saturday due to wind, was deemed under control late on Sunday.
“Firefighters stopped the spread of the fire on Sunday with heavy rainfall in the area assisting with suppression activities,” a CFA spokesperson said.
“Crews are now working on hazardous trees and extinguishing any hot spots.”
Forest Fire Management Victoria taskforce crews were onsite overnight on Sunday allowing local CFA volunteers to rest up, with Montrose Fire Brigade posting to social media that their “firefighters had a well earned rest”.
“You will still be seeing fire trucks around the area over the coming days. This is nothing to be alarmed by as they are just patrolling the fire perimeter and keeping an eye on everything,” the brigade posted.
“If you see us, give us a wave and a thumbs up.”
Yarra Ranges Council will begin door-knocking efforts, with support from trained volunteers from the Victoria Council of Churches’ Emergencies Ministry, from Tuesday 18 March to check in on residents.
Mayor Jim Child said the community effort of support, kindness and out-reach has already been remarkable.
“In these difficult situations, it’s the incredible strength of our communities that shines through as they step up to support one another,” Mayor Jim Child said.
“The Montrose Township Group has been at the heart of this response, and the council will continue to work alongside them, and other groups to best support our community.”
The council’s impact assessment teams are ready to support residents whose properties have been damaged.
It has also initiated the early recovery process to understand the environmental impact of the bushfire and what recovery efforts will be required.
Waste services impacted by road closures and other bushfire affects, will resume as soon as possible.
“Rest assured, affected properties will receive their waste pickup as soon as it is clear to do so. You will not have to wait until the next scheduled service,” Cr Child said.
Temporary road closures have been removed, with full access now available.
