Fire brigades across the Dandenong Ranges have put out pleas to the community not to call Triple Zero unless flames can be seen.
A number of false call outs for columns of smoke were issued at around 9am on Friday 9 January across Olinda, Mount Dandenong, Menzies Creek and Upwey.
“We are getting lots of calls out on the mountain for ‘columns of smoke’ and after investigation, it’s just drifting smoke from the Longwood fires north of us,” Belgrave Fire Brigade posted to social media.
“We appreciate your vigilance; however it is going to be smoky today, please only call 000 if you see flames or a column of smoke that is pushing up through the haze.”
Monbulk and Montrose CFAs also reiterated this message.
Keeping the line clear, Montrose said, “This helps keep emergency lines available for genuine emergencies. Thank you for your understanding and cooperation.”
Upper Ferntree Gully Fire Brigade has opened the station between 10am and 12pm “for anyone wanting to come in and talk about the day.”
They advised that VicEmergency or ABC Radio is the best place to stay up to date, with social media pages not being “monitored through what is likely to be a challenging day.”
“Stay safe, and look after those around you.”
